Calling this 1996 science fiction thriller "a glorified B movie," isn't a criticism. Writer-director David Twohy managed to get interesting material on the screen despite a limited budget, and the film is just believable enough to be satisfying as a tale of paranoid conspiracy. If you can ignore the hokey parts and accept Charlie Sheen as noted radio astronomer Zane Ziminski, you'll get thoroughly involved when the reception of an alien radio signal leads him to Mexico and to a huge underground power plant operated by aliens bent on the eventual takeover of Earth. Ron Silver is suitably chilling as the astronomer's boss, whose real identity is more horrifying than Ziminski ever imagined. The underground alien lair is memorably creepy, and Twohy's film is just smart enough to qualify as more than a guilty pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

A great but underwhelming release. - I remember watching this years ago and enjoying it immensely, so when I picked it up on Blu-ray my expectations were fairly high. Now I'll be the first to admit that my memory was of course skewed but even though The Arrival remains a highly enjoyable film. Some of the dialogue can be extraordinarily bad but can be forgiven. The plot is interesting and believable with Sheen putting in a decent little performance. The transfer of the film really brings out the detail but for some reason looks really washed out. The Soundtrack to the film is where this release shines, the 7.1 DTS HD master audio balances everything nicely without becoming overwhelming. The Blu-ray lacks special features of any kind only relying on a few HD trailers to round off the disc. The blu-ray is much better quality compared to the dvd, if you enjoy this movie I'd say it's definitely worth it to pick it up!

A decent Sci-Fi paranoia flick... - I watched this one in the theaters and was one of the few in the seats during the first weekend. It disappeared a few weeks later. Again, I enjoyed the film and enjoyed it for what the company had to spend on to make it. Don't expect no big Wows and bangs here. It's just good cheap cinema.

Blu-Ray Review - Bought mine at [...] for $8.00 along with several other Lionsgate Blu-Rays for $8.00 each. Not a bad way to spend 8 bucks. Cheaper than a movie ticket.

Great Sci Fi Fun - This is one of my favorite sci-fi conspiracy movies. This is in the vein of John Carpenters "They Live". I really enjoyed seeing Charlie Sheen do something a little different as far as his character in this film. He is a scientist nerd in this film who is really curious but a little insecure in his love life. It's a little bit of a low budget Saturday Matinee type film but a lot of fun along the way. It's really cool to see this on Blu-Ray for collectors of old Sci Fi movies like myself.

They're here! Already! - 4 of 5 stars for the Charlie Sheen Sci-FI movie The Arrival. First contact with aliens? No, in this movie they are already here! I've seen this movie several times and always find it fun to watch. So, let's start with Charlie Sheen who plays a (non-comical) radio astronomer. Nice to see him playing a real character without the jokes and womanizing. He makes a discovery of a radio signal beaming from Mexico to a distant planet. "They" have been keeping an eye on him and get him fired from his job and banded from the telescope. Sheen uses a series of TV dishes in the neighborhood to create a radio telescope ganged array to resume his search for that signal. Eventually he travels to Mexico to look for the source of the signal. Let's just say he discovers several twin brothers for his old boss; hummm? Soon he begins to discover that not all of the towns people are human.

This is a fun sci-fi movie with some good effects. The effects are in good check and not too many; this is a sci-fi story movie. Happy with Sheen's character. A really good fun movie to watch with some popcorn! Highly recommended.

well worth watching - This is a very entertaining movie, that will problably satisfy sci-fi and suspense fans alike. The plot is convincing and the acting was very good in my opinion. No spoilers here. Better than average.

Stinker - I saw this by accident on FiOS. What a stinker. Plot is awful. Characters thin. Effects cheesy. "Sets" phony. The very idea of buying this on Blu-ray is laughable. Sheen is a joke. He should stick to what he knows: one-line sex jokes, hookers and beating up his wives.

This is a third world-produced "film" that should have gone straight to video that I'd perhaps buy used for $1 at a garage sale, and then throw away to save space. This makes Plan 9 From Outer Space look plausible.

Man am I glad I saw it on a backwater channel and didn't put any money out on this turkey, even as a rental. There is no doubt why it failed at the box office. It would have failed at 2:00 AM on Syfy channel.

If this is what passes for good sci-fi, y'all have a pretty low threshold for quality.

Great movie, bare bones disc - The bluray picture quality and sound were fine, zero extras. Only for fans of the film.

Classic! - The Arrival is a CLASSIC sci-fi movie, complete with aliens, the myth of global warming and scorpions. What more could you ask for. Charlie Sheen plays a S.E.T.I. scientist looking for ET when he discovers, whoops, they're already here. Cool special effects, and GREAT HD sound, this blu-ray is a blast.

Blu-Ray brings quality again. - I was pretty upset with the DVD version of this film. But the Blu-ray really comes through. The picture is great and so is the sound.

A Blu-ray Review - "The Arrival" is an interesting new classic. Back when it was released, it came ou the same summer as "Independence Day" and was considered the counter-programming to that big-budget blockbuster for its emphasis on character and story as opposed to huse special effects. "The Arrival" tells the story of a scientist (played with suprising nuance and likability by Charlie Sheen) who comes across an alien signal (a la "Contact") from another world. This leads him on a chase to discover the meaning of the signal and who (or what) sent them. I won't put spoilers in, but I will say one of the twists of the story is what makes "The Arrival" remain remarkably relevant. The motives and activities of the aliens are explained in such a way that blurs the lines as to who is right, whereas in ID4, the aliens were merely evil. Great supporting performances by Richard Schiff,Terri Polo, the late Ron Silver, and the always wonderful and compelling Lindsay Crouse. Writer-Director David Twohy (The Chronicles of Riddick, The Perfect Getaway) makes the movie quite exciting and intelligent and while the special effects are not on par with ID4 (to compare by time period), they are dazzling in their own way because they are interesting and mean something. "The Arrival" is a suprisingly exhilarating ride, where the ideas are more exciting than any special effect.

Fans of the movie will be delighted by this Blu-ray 1080p transfer. The picture has flaws such as the colors not being as vivid as they should and the use of DNR which created some smearing and washing out of the brighter scenes. I will say that I think this has more to do with the source material and its budget constraints. DNR, I suspect was used on the source material if the original print was damaged. Overall it looks great with some very vivid colors and jaw-droppingly fine detail for a movie of its age. It has never looked better and leave previous prints in the dust. Very nice looking.

The audio is amazing. LionsGate continues to treat us with its catalogue releases with a DTS-HD MA 7.1 lossless soundtrack. "The Arrival" has never sounded this great, with fabulously aggressive sound, terrific directional and ambient sound effects, and crisp dialogue. Just look at the scene where the aliens plant an otherwordly ball on Zane's lab that creates a vortec which sucks away all his equipment, emptying the room. The scene is loud, awesome bass and directional effects, and the visual effects look great. The climactic action sequence atop a massic satellite dish looks and sounds phenomenal as well.

The only disappointment for me is the absence of any special features. A commentary would have been great (David Twohy is fan of doing these, so what gives?) or some kind of making of doc or some new interviews. But alas, not so much as a theatrical trailer. But, LionsGate has split the difference and filled the entire 25GB disc with the picture and audio, which, in the end, is what I was after. If your a fan of the film and have one its many DVD versions, the upgrade is a must as it blows away the previous releases. I bought mine at Walmart for $8.00...what is there to argue with???
