John Moore Cornwell was born on October 19, 1931 in Poole, Dorsetshire.
By 1936 his mother had deserted him and his father had repeatedly
been in and out of jail. He attended an English boarding school
with his brother. In 1947 he staged a nervous breakdown to avoid
being sent back to Sherborne. He attended Berne University in
Switzerland. He received a degree in German literature and in
modern languages from Oxford. From 1958 to 1963 he became a translator
for five British prime ministers. He married a woman named Jane
and had four sons. He currently has ten grandchildren.
